Economic Downturn….What to do?

April 17, 2009

On my blog I was writing about employee engagement and someone mentioned that a lot of organizations are cutting back on employee engagement to reduce costs. I was asked if I thought employee engagement was an investment. Of course it is an investment and the organizations that survive and do well coming out of the economic downturn are going to be the ones that keep investing in employee engagement. But when times are tough organizations do look to cut costs and those that stop investing in engaging their employees will be in trouble. There are two extremely good examples of companies that were facing extinction and instead of cutting employee engagement investments, they increased them. The first company was Harley Davidson who recreated themselves and went on to be a success. The second organization was John Deere and they have done extremely well since coming back from the brink of extinction. So what do you do in an economic downturn, you invest in employee engagement and get the most out of your employees.

ESI Contribution to terminated employees

April 17, 2009

Hi

We had terminated some employees, the Labour court ordered reinstatement. High Court has admitted our appeal and stayed reinstatement st 17B.
ESI says we should pay contribution, our stand is that payment under court order is outside purview of definition of wages U/s 2 (22) ESI Act.

Please advise whether we have to deduct ESI? Is there any case laws?

Thanks

Conveyance allowance

April 17, 2009

What is the rule for structuring part of your salary to be a paid as a conveyance/transport allowance of Rs. 800 per month (Rs. 9600 per year), which is exempt from tax and no bills need be provided? Do I have to own a vehicle? What if I live on campus? Am I still eligible to receive the conveyance allowance tax-free?

HR challenges for Tech Mahindra – Satyam

April 16, 2009

So the uncertainty about my ex-employer has ended. Thankfully Satyam has not gone the Enron and Lehman way to implosion but in 100 days has been acquired by a smaller niche player Tech Mahindra.

Here are the big issues that I see for the merged entity:

  1. There are reportedly 12000 -13000 people on the bench in Satyam. While the government controlled board was there they had some job security. However once the acquisition process is complete how will TM decide on their future.
  2. Support groups. Tech Mahindra has internal support groups for HR, IT, Marketing, Finance – however it would need to keep a large part of Satyam’s team also – because of the diversity of Satyam’s business. However there would be some redundancies.
  3. Top management. I feel that the group that could see a major churn is the top management – perceived to be close to the former Chairman.
  4. Headquarters. The location of the headquarters plays a major part in the identity of the organization. Satyam was always a Hyderabadi origin company – how will it’s image change if the headquarters are moved to Mumbai.
A comparison of Tech Mahindra’s services and Satyam’s services .
