Group Insurance

November 29, 2009

Group Insurance appears to be most deserving area for attention of HR Managers, being one of the tools to attract and retain talent. I recollect, many large IT companies becoming preferred employer for same reason, offering better group insurance benefits and causing exodus in other companies. Such group insurances are mainly loss making business for insurance companies, till now, and hence discouraged by insurance companies. From employer/employee angle, it provides a good bargain based on law of statistical averages or saving on account of volume buying. Group Insurnace provides much cheaper facilities as compared to one opted individually but would not surely replace need of having individual policies for you and your family and also for taking care of post retirement. You can have group insurance products for Hospitalisation, accidents, death covers, saving cum casualities, and also for separating funds of your company required for payment of gratuity, leave encashment and also for strting superannuation (we all lack a good pension plan). Mostly companies donot segregate funds for employee related statutory obligations (except PF which is mandatory) when it is passing thorugh good phase and when the phase is bad like recession, the issue of separating funds becomes irrelevant as survival is fought. Market is flooded with products and confusions. I also find that while opting the policy first time, employers provide a variety of benefits to employee and realising soon in later years that such benefits cannot be sustained over a period. As the claims would grow, premium would grow and there is no free lunch. So the most critical step is to put your full wisdon when you buy the first product for your employer. This may not be your area of specialisation and the vendor (insurance co) will have conflicting interst. Use a broker/consultant. I too advise on such matters to one of the leading Insurance brokerage house of the country. I would be too happy to advise you (short of responding to your query of telling a specific product or company) on any apsect of these products and for specific products or a company, I would suggest many others who would guide you. Please be informed that now, insurance companies are unwilling to offer products for less than 1000 employees specially risk based products, however, fund based products like gratuity, leave encashment etc, could be available for any number and fund size attracts insurance companies.I have also seen other threads/messages posted on this site, (which I believe is the best site for our profession, at least in India, I frequently seek help from this) but find that issues are not responded with authority and by experts having knowledge and at times, this can lead to confusion. While you own homework would always be essential, you will need handholding by experts. You can respond here or get in touch with me. M M Lohia, 9910493350

Best Reason for Long Leave for 2.5 months

November 29, 2009

Hi All,

I am working with my company from past 2 years.

I want to take long leave for 2.5 months (of course Loss of Pay) on the grounds of personal reason.

I knew my organization give long leave as my manager said to me once he took leave for 1 month

and another instance is
One of my team mate who joined 2 weeks back applied for 2 months leave ( Saying he did an accident and blah blah… and joined in some other company , finally our HR team finally inquired about him and fired him)

I genuinely want to take long leave for 2.5 months for studying and resume the service after 2.5 months

Please suggest me some good reasons and how should I approach my Manager

(Suggestions from HR People are most welcome)

Thanks in Advance
