Maternity Leave for Contract Employees in Karnataka Government Institution

February 28, 2010

Dear All,

My wife works as a contract Tutor for MBBS students from past two years in Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore. It is a college run by Karnataka State Government and affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

I wanted to know if she can avail maternity leave post delivery. As she had enquired in the office, they told that she has to take leave on loss of pay. But I am skeptical as I think Maternity Benefits Act applys to contract employees as well. Please help me by providing proper details of labour law and whom to contact if we have to fight to get the leave.

Thanks and Regards,
Harsha

CL convert to EL

February 28, 2010

Dear Sir,
I am working in a Computer Education Limited company as a Trainer. Our leave structure start from January to December. Last year (2009) I avail 4 CL (2 CL in the month of May, 1 CL in the month of October & 1 in November) and it is granted from HR Dept. I have some EL balance and from last year and 7 leave carry forwarded to current year. I am taking one day leave in February 2010 for some “Bank related work” and it is my first leave in the running year, but problem is that, HR Dept said that I can’t apply for CL, it must be EL. After all EL exhaust than I am eligible to take CL, not only that, my all last year CL is convert to EL and to be adjusted with current year EL balance. I don’t know how it is possible, where all leaves are granted and end the cycle in 31st December .Do we have this type of rule in HR?? Should we recall and adjust the leave as said by HR Dept?? What are the rules relating to leaves (CL/EL/SL) and holidays should follow by a private limited company.
Please help me and clarify it, because I am totally confused about it.
Regards
Somtalks

How does someone get to prove himself (get to attend interviews and prove himself)

February 28, 2010

Hi,
I have seen companies posting ads for 3+ yrs exp and very very rarely for freshers and that too recently passed outs. My question….Many of my friends have passed out of their Engineering 3 yrs back and they don’t have a job right now. If they post their resume as fresher, they don’t get any calls. If they fake their resume putting experience, just, to get an opportunity to prove themselves, they are rejected during the verification or prescreening (if I can call it so).

Many of these friends of mine are talented and they are capable of doing the job better than the people I see around in my company. I am sure HR has lots of techniques to scrutinize and I have few of such techniques which are fool-proof and works 100%.

How do folks who has passed out 2yrs to 4yrs back and are without job get to face the interview at all. Should they fake their resume, or shouldn’t they? Considering things were not good in job market in the last 2yrs, I am sure you can understand very few freshers could secure a job and the remaining are jobless. Pls keep them in mind while responding to the query..

Thanks,
Giri.

Two Personal Branding Websites

February 27, 2010

You know, there’s something called Synchronicity :-) In a span of about 48 hours I got approached by two websites – Brand Yourself and FirstDialog which are web apps that are meant to help you manage your brand

The email from FirstDialog stated:

FirstDialog is a Web 2.0 online personal branding and social recruitment platform that helps professionals and jobseekers create a memorable personal brand.
With FirstDialog, professionals and jobseekers can create an interactive, web based, multimedia rich resume with quantifiable and trusted information. FirstDialog will help jobseekers elevate their resume to a whole new level with the use of interactive multimedia, secure document showcase, verified credentials, smart follow-up, skill assessment and certification, professional networking, social sharing and more.

The big issue they need to work on is building the resume. Filling out a online wizard to build a resume online is a bit of pain for me. They did tell me that they are in talks with certain business networking platforms which would enable one to import an already ready profile from somewhere else. Hope that comes across soon.

One then connects with people like on Linkedin. However unlike Linkedin FD is focused on social recruitment – and lists jobs via indeed.com (which is US centric so far) on your dashboard.

This is how one’s profile looks on FirstDialog

The Dashboard shows you jobs posted via your network (which you invite)

All in all it’s an interesting website – however let’s see if people are upto joining yet another networking website. If you want to give it a spin here’s a code to check out the Alpha version – GG11FD

Brand-Yourself takes a different turn on personal branding. Knowing that Google, Twitter, Linkedin and other social networks can build your online brand, it makes it easy to build a website, take you through building a Linkedin site, Twitter id, and steps to make it visible and public.

The most interesting thing for me was organizing the Google results (see below) to say which is about you and which is not about you. It made me discover some old forgotten links like my Amazon reviews :)

For people who don’t have a website – Brand-Yourself also enables you to open a site (using wordpress!) like this one. There is also step by step explanation on how to use free PR newswire sites to build your brand.

I loved BY’s take on personal branding
